Sinus X-Ray

Is an imaging test that uses a small amount of radiation to visualize details of your sinuses. Sinuses are paired (right and left) air-filled pockets that circumscribe the nasal structures. They clean the air breathed through the nose and provide shape to the face.

Parameters defined during the test

  • The shape and size of the paranasal sinuses
  • The contours of the paranasal sinuses
  • Condition of surrounding structures
  • The presence of fluid or foreign bodies in the paranasal sinuses
  • Stuffy nose with thick nasal secretions that may appear white, yellow, or green
  • Pain or tenderness in the forehead, between the eyes, in the cheeks, and upper jaw
  • Swelling around the eyes, around the nose, and in the cheeks
  • Decreased sense of smell
  • Postnasal drainage
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Earache
  • Fever

How the procedure is performed

Tell your doctor if you are or think you are pregnant. You will be asked to remove all jewelry.

You are asked to sit in a chair so that any fluid in the sinuses can be seen in the x-ray images. The technologist may place your head in different positions as the images are taken.

 Abnormalities determined by Sinus X-Ray

  • Sinusitis
  • Paranasal  sinus cyst
  • Paranasal  sinus tumors
  • Paranasal  sinus fractures
  • Foreign bodies in the paranasal sinuses
