Tongue ultrasound

Is highly informative method of investigation for diagnosis of diseases and pathological conditions. Today it is very widely used in dentistry, otorhinolaryngology and oncology.

Depending on the technique, there are two types of tongue ultrasound examination:

  • Transcutaneous –the sensor is applied to the skin under the lower jaw.
  • Transoral –the sensor is introduced into the oral cavity.

According to the latest clinical trials, transoral ultrasound technique is more informative.

Parametres  defined during the test

  • The structure of tongue tissues.
  • The presence of tumors, their contour, size and echoicity.
  • Presence of liquid formations in the thickness of tongue.
  • The presence of foreign bodies in the tissues of tongue.
  • Cindition of the regional lymph nodes.
  • Constant or recurring pain in the area of language, which increases during eating and swallowing.
  • Swelling, redness of the tongue.
  • The presence of chronic, long-unhealed ulcers on the tongue.
  • Increased tongue  size, presence of palpable masses in its tissues.
  • Bad breath.
  • The change of saliva color, in particular, the presence of blood impurities.

Tongue ultrasound examination does not require special preparation before it is executed, but for a comfortable diagnosis, brush your teeth and wash your mouth with warm water before the procedure.

The study can be conducted in two ways. During one of them the sensor is applied to the skin under the lower jaw, and the second time is introduced into the oral cavity. Both methods have no contraindications and side effects.

  • Benign tumors.
  • Malignant tumors, spread to neighboring tissues and metastases in local lymph nodes.
  • Purulent inflammatory diseases: abscess, phlegmon.
  • A foreign body in the tissues of the tongue.
