Salivary glands ultrasound

Is the method of organs visualization with the aim of identifying their pathological changes. The technique is widely used in dentistry, otorhinolaryngology and oncology. It makes it possible to diagnose large number of diseases of the salivary glands without any harm to human health.

  • A lump (usually painless) in the area of the ear, cheek, jaw, lip, or inside the mouth.
  • Fluid draining from the ear.
  • Trouble swallowing or opening the mouth widely.
  • Numbness or weakness in the face.
  • Pain in the face that does not go away.

Salivary glands ultrasound examination requires no special preparation. The oral hygiene will help to improve diagnostic procedures performance quality.

Examination perfomance

As for the salivary glands ultrasound technique, it depends on what is investigated. For visualization of the parotid gland the sensor is placed on the surface of the skin in front of the ear. The study of the sublingual and submandibular salivary glands the apparatus is placed in the oral cavity. To prevent possible complications of the inflammatory processes before putting the sensor in the oral cavity it is treated with an antiseptic solution.

Salivary glands ultrasound is done to:

  • Find the cause of swelling in the major salivary glands. Swelling may be caused by an infection (abscess), inflammation, or a pocket of fluid (cyst).
  • See if a growth in the parotid gland is a benign tumor or may be cancer.
  • Find the cause of dry mouth (xerostomia). Several problems can cause dry mouth, such as a blocked salivary duct, a growth in a salivary gland, or Sjögren's syndrome.
  • Abnormalities
  • Acute inflammations of the salivary glands
  • Chronic (recurrent) sialadenitis
  • Sjögren's Syndrome
  • Epithelioid sialadenitis
  • Tuberculosis of the salivary glands
  • Post-Radiotherapy sialadenitis
  • Sialolithiasis
