Pleural effusion

Is excess fluid that accumulates in the pleural cavity, the fluid-filled space that surrounds the lungs.

Symptoms:

  • Chest pain.
  • Dry, nonproductive cough.
  • Dyspnea (shortness of breath, or difficult, labored breathing)
  • Orthopnea (the inability to breathe easily unless the person is sitting up straight or standing erect)
