Cardiovascular surgery
A treatment for patients with diseases of the heart and great vessels, and includes procedures such as coronary artery bypass surgery, cardiac transplantation, and mechanical support of circulation. Cardiovascular surgery also provides treatment for many complex cardiac problems, including valvular disease hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, thoracic aneurysms and adult congenital heart disease.
A cardiovascular surgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in the surgical repair of the heart and blood vessels damaged by diseases or medical disorders.

Each year, our surgeons care for thousands of patients, young and old, who require virtually every type of heart surgery including heart bypass surgery; elective or emergency surgery for aortic aneurysm, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias (such as atrial fibrillation), heart failure, marfan syndrome and other less common conditions; and heart valve surgery for valve disease (such as mitral regurgitation or aortic stenosis). Risks for open-heart surgery include:
- chest wound infection (more common in patients with obesity or diabetes, or those who have had a CABG before)

- irregular heartbeat
- lung or kidney failure
- chest pain and low fever
- memory loss or “fuzziness”
- blood clot
- blood loss
- breathing difficulty
- pneumonia
